Night Splint
Lack of flexibility in the calf muscles is the most common cause of heel pain, plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, and especially achilles tendonitis.  Night splints can be used in the evening to improve calf muscle flexibility.  They can also be used during sleep to prevent night-time contracture of the calf muscle so that the first few steps in the morning are not painful.  If the pain with the first few steps in the morning is no longer present, then it is a good indication that the morning re-injury process has stopped and the heel will then have time to heal.  Night splints are worn by some sufferers for only 30 minutes each evening, but others wear them all night so that when they wake up in the morning their calf muscles will not be tight from lack of use during the night.  Morning heel pain is usually caused by tight calf muscles.
