FAQs

What is a sprain or strain?

Sprains are caused by overstretching or tearing ligaments, and strains are tears in tendons or muscles.

What is a lumbar strain?

A lumbar strain is an injury to the lower back. This results in damaged tendons and muscles that can spasm and feel sore. The lumbar vertebra make up the section of the spine in your lower back.

What are the symptoms of a lumbar strain?

Sudden lower back pain

Spasms in the lower back that result in more severe pain

Lower back feels sore to the touch

Pain and stiffness in the back.

Pain in the buttocks and the legs, often in the back of the thigh.

Pain that worsens when bending, stretching, coughing, or sneezing

The symptoms of a lumbar strain may resemble other conditions and medical problems. Always talk with your healthcare provider for a diagnosis.

What are lumbosacral strains?

Lumbosacral strain is a medical term for an injury that causes lower back pain. The lumbosacral area (low back) is between the bottom of the rib cage and the top of the buttocks.

What causes lumbar strain?

Sprains and strains, herniated or ruptured discs, sciatica, a traumatic injury, spinal stenosis, intervertebral disc degeneration, radiculopathy, spondylolisthesis, or skeletal irregularities

What is a herniated or ruptured disc?

When the intervertebral discs become compressed and bulge outward (herniation) or rupture, causing low back pain.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is the name given to pain caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve. Anything that irritates this nerve can cause pain, ranging from mild to severe. Often, the term “sciatica” is confused with general back pain. However, sciatica is not just limited to the back. The sciatic nerve is the longest and widest nerve in the human body. It runs from the lower back, through the buttocks, and down the legs, ending just below the knee. Sciatica is not a condition, but rather a symptom of another problem involving the sciatic nerve.

What is a traumatic injury?

Such as from playing sports, car accidents, or a fall can injure tendons, ligaments, or muscle resulting in low back pain.

What is spinal stenosis?

A narrowing of the spinal column puts pressure on the spinal cord and nerves that can cause pain or numbness with walking and over time leads to leg weakness and sensory loss.

What is intervertebral disc degeneration?

One of the most common mechanical causes of low back pain, and it occurs when the usually rubbery discs lose integrity as a normal process of aging.

What is radiculopathy?

A condition caused by compression, inflammation, and/or injury to a spinal nerve root. May occur when spinal stenosis or a herniated or ruptured disc compresses the nerve root.

 What is spondylolisthesis?

A condition in which a vertebra of the lower spine slips out of place, pinching the nerves exiting the spinal column.

 What are skeletal irregularities?

Include scoliosis, a curvature of the spine that does not usually cause pain until middle age; lordosis, an abnormally accentuated arch in the lower back; and other congenital anomalies of the spine.
