How to Measure for the Correct Size
Sizing is based on two measurements: Calf Height and Shoe Size. Do not measure circumference — the velcro strap wraps around the thickest point of your calf, so what matters is the height of that point from the floor, not how wide your calf is.
Calf Height (Primary): Stand upright. Find the thickest point of your calf — this is where the velcro strap will sit and hold the brace in place. Using a flexible tape measure, measure from that thickest point straight down to the floor. Match this measurement to the chart below.
Shoe Size (Secondary): Use your regular US shoe size to confirm the correct size and foot plate length.
📏 Sizing & Fit Tips:
Measure your calf at its thickest point — this is where the velcro holds the brace, so calf height (not circumference) is what determines your size.
If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size for a more secure fit.
If the foot plate is slightly too long for your shoe, it can be professionally trimmed. Any orthotic company — such as Hanger Orthotics and Prosthetics — can trim your AFO foot plate to the correct size. Do not buy a larger size just to accommodate your shoe.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is foot drop and what causes it?
Foot drop (also called drop foot) is the inability to lift the front part of the foot, causing it to drag on the floor during walking. It is not a disease itself — it is a sign of an underlying neurological, muscular, or anatomical problem. Common causes include compression or injury to the peroneal nerve, stroke, multiple sclerosis, ALS, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, or complications from hip or knee replacement surgery. Foot drop may be temporary or permanent depending on the underlying cause.
What are the symptoms of foot drop?
Foot drop makes it difficult to lift the front part of your foot, causing it to drag on the floor. This often results in a steppage gait — raising the thigh higher than normal to clear the foot — and foot slap when the foot hits the ground. In some cases, the skin on the top of the foot and toes may feel numb. Patients may also trip or stumble more frequently on uneven surfaces.
How do I measure for the correct AFO Dynamic size?
Sizing is based on calf height — not circumference. Stand upright and find the thickest point of your calf. This is where the velcro strap wraps around and holds the brace in place. Measure from that thickest point straight down to the floor. Match this measurement to the size chart above. Your shoe size is used as a secondary confirmation. Do not measure calf circumference — it is not used for sizing this brace.
What if the foot plate is too long for my shoe?
Do not buy a larger size to accommodate your shoe. Instead, have the foot plate professionally trimmed. Any orthotic company — such as Hanger Orthotics and Prosthetics — can trim your AFO foot plate to the correct size. This is a routine procedure that preserves the structural integrity of the carbon fiber and ensures a proper fit inside your shoe.
Can the AFO Dynamic handle mild knee instability?
Yes. Unlike the AFO Light, the AFO Dynamic provides medial-lateral stability at mid-stance, making it suitable for patients with mild knee instability in addition to drop foot. The full-length toe lever and tapered carbon heel also help reduce compensatory movements that can stress the knee and hip during gait.
When should I replace the straps and padding?
With daily use, soft goods typically need replacement approximately once per year. Signs that replacement is needed include: Velcro no longer grips securely, padding is compressed or thinned, straps are frayed or stretched, or the brace feels loose even when fully tightened. The AFO Dynamic Accessory Kit includes all replacement soft goods.

“This is just what I needed. I had a drop foot brace with the plastic running up the back of my leg. It worked for what it was designed for. I needed more rigidity in both the forward and backward movement of my ankle in order to keep my balance better. This helps a great deal.”
