Frequently Asked Questions — DeRoyal Concise Knee Patella Stabilizer
What is patellofemoral pain syndrome (runner’s knee) and will this brace help?
Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) occurs when the kneecap doesn’t track properly in the femoral groove, causing pain at the front of the knee during walking, running, and stair climbing. The DeRoyal Concise uses an adjustable C-shaped buttress to gently guide the kneecap back into proper alignment, reducing friction and anterior knee pain. It is one of the most commonly recommended braces for PFPS by orthopedic surgeons and physical therapists.
What is the difference between patella subluxation and dislocation?
Patella subluxation is a partial displacement of the kneecap — it shifts out of the groove but returns on its own. A full dislocation means the kneecap completely leaves the groove and requires manual reduction. This brace is designed for subluxation and tracking disorders. If you have experienced a full dislocation, consult your orthopedic surgeon before using any brace.
Can I wear this brace after patella realignment surgery?
Many patients use a patella stabilizer during the rehabilitation phase following realignment procedures such as MPFL reconstruction or tibial tubercle osteotomy (TTO). Your surgeon or physical therapist should approve the specific brace and timing of use. This brace is not a substitute for a post-operative immobilizer prescribed immediately after surgery.
Should I choose Neoprene or Tri-Tex?
Choose Neoprene if you need maximum compression, therapeutic warmth, or are in a rehabilitation or recovery phase. Choose Tri-Tex if you are active, exercise regularly, live in a warm climate, or need to wear the brace for extended periods — its moisture-wicking fabric keeps you cooler and more comfortable during high-activity use.
