Ossur Exoform Knee Immobilizer Brace – Post-Op & Knee Ligament Support

The Ossur Exoform Knee Immobilizer is a clinically designed knee immobilizer brace that holds the knee in full extension during post-injury recovery, post-operative healing, and ligament protection. Its patented Slide-to-Size adjustment system and dual-cuff design deliver a superior, customizable fit without the guesswork of traditional sizing. Available in Cool Foam (breathable mesh) and Full Foam (standard padding) versions, with a 3XL Full Foam option for larger thigh circumferences.

What is a Knee Immobilizer?

A knee immobilizer is a rigid or semi-rigid brace that holds the knee in a straight (extended) position. It is commonly prescribed after knee surgery, ligament injuries, or fractures to prevent bending and protect healing tissue. Unlike a hinged knee brace, a knee immobilizer does not allow a controlled range of motion — it is designed for full immobilization as directed by your clinician.

Cool Foam vs. Full Foam — Which should I choose?

  • Cool Foam (222100) — Breathable mesh foam panels with ventilation. Best for warmer climates, active patients, or extended wear where heat and moisture buildup are a concern.
  • Full Foam (222000) — Standard closed-cell foam padding. Provides more cushioning and warmth. Preferred in cooler environments or when additional padding is needed.
  • 3XL Full Foam (222050) — Full Foam construction in an extended size for thigh circumferences up to 38".

Size & Fit Guide

The Exoform uses a Slide-to-Size system — one brace adjusts to fit a range of leg sizes. Confirm your leg inseam and thigh circumference before ordering.

How to measure: Wrap a soft tape measure around your thigh at its widest point (mid-thigh) to get your thigh circumference. Measure your leg inseam from the groin to the floor. If your thigh circumference exceeds 28", select the 3XL Full Foam option.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is a knee immobilizer prescribed?

A knee immobilizer is typically prescribed by an orthopedic surgeon or physician after ACL, PCL, MCL, or LCL ligament surgery or injury; following knee fracture or dislocation; post-operative immobilization after procedures such as meniscus repair, patellar surgery, or total knee replacement; and during acute trauma stabilization before definitive treatment. Your clinician will specify the duration and wearing schedule based on your diagnosis and surgical protocol.

How long do I wear a knee immobilizer after surgery?

Wearing duration varies by procedure and surgeon protocol. After ACL reconstruction, immobilizers are often worn for the first 1–2 weeks post-op, then transitioned to a hinged ROM brace. After meniscus repair or patellar surgery, immobilization may extend 4–6 weeks. For fractures, 6–8 weeks or longer is common. Always follow your surgeon’s specific instructions — do not discontinue use without clinical guidance, as premature removal can compromise healing tissue.

Can I walk or bear weight while wearing a knee immobilizer?

Weight-bearing status while wearing a knee immobilizer depends entirely on your surgeon’s orders and your specific diagnosis. Some patients are permitted to bear weight with the immobilizer locked in extension (often with crutches), while others are placed on non-weight-bearing protocols. The Ossur Exoform holds the knee in full extension, which is the required position for safe ambulation when weight-bearing is permitted. Always confirm your weight-bearing status with your orthopedic provider before attempting to walk.

Where do I measure to size the Exoform Knee Immobilizer?

Measure your thigh circumference at its widest point (mid-thigh) using a soft tape measure. Standard versions (Cool Foam 222100 and Full Foam 222000) fit thigh circumferences up to 28" (71 cm) and leg inseams of 18–24" (46–61 cm). The 3XL Full Foam (222050) fits thigh circumferences up to 38" (97 cm). Measure your leg inseam from the groin to the floor.

What is the difference between Cool Foam and Full Foam?

Cool Foam (222100) uses breathable mesh foam panels that allow airflow, reducing heat and moisture buildup — ideal for warmer climates, active patients, or extended wear. Full Foam (222000) uses standard closed-cell foam padding that provides more cushioning and warmth, preferred in cooler environments or when additional padding comfort is needed. Both versions offer the same Slide-to-Size fit system and clinical performance.
