Upgrade to a Walking Cast - Add a Cast Heel
A standard short leg cast can be converted into a functional walking cast by applying a cast heel to the bottom. Here's how it works:
- Apply a fiberglass sole slab to the bottom of the cast using a 4" roll of casting tape to reinforce the walking surface.
- Position the cast heel on the bottom of the cast over the slab.
- Secure the heel firmly by wrapping with a 2" roll of fiberglass casting tape.
You'll need the following (sold separately):
- OrthoTape Walking Cast Heel - choose Cushion Tread or Pedestal style
- OrthoTape 4" Fiberglass Cast Tape - Single Roll - for the reinforcing sole slab

I finally had my procedure on 11/9/2023. This product seems to be working very well. My Dr's office applied it for me with only a minor issue. The fiberglass cures almost too quickly using hot water. The instructions said to use hot water and it became difficult to work with one of the bandages after only a minute or so. But I will definitely use the product again.
