Description

Ossur Formfit Cast Boot – Short Low Top | Non-Inflated Walking Cast Boot

The Ossur Formfit Short Non-Inflated Cast Boot is a lightweight, low-profile walking cast boot designed for ankle fractures, foot injuries, toe fractures, and post-operative rehabilitation. The short low-top design is ideal for forefoot and midfoot conditions where a full-height boot is not required. No air bladder or pump needed. For pneumatic compression, see the Formfit Air Short (with Air).

Short vs. Tall — Which height do I need?

  • This boot (Short Low-Top) — Lower profile, better for forefoot injuries, toe fractures, metatarsal fractures, or when less ankle restriction is needed.
  • Tall High-Top version — Extends higher above the ankle for greater immobilization. Best for ankle fractures, severe sprains, or Achilles injuries.

Size Chart & Fit Guide

Universal fit — fits left or right foot.

⚠️ Important: These Boots Fit a Size Range — Not a Single Shoe Size

The extra room allows for bandaging, swelling, post-surgical dressings, and thick socks. When in doubt, go up a size.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a non-inflated cast boot and a pneumatic (air) cast boot?

A non-inflated cast boot uses a foam liner to cushion and support the foot and ankle — no pump or air bladder is required. A pneumatic (air) cast boot adds an inflatable bladder that allows you to adjust compression as swelling changes throughout the day. Non-inflated boots are simpler to use and slightly lighter. Pneumatic boots offer more precise fit control, which is especially useful in the early stages of recovery when swelling fluctuates significantly. Your clinician will recommend the appropriate type based on your injury and recovery phase.

What is a metatarsal fracture and how does a cast boot help it heal?

The metatarsals are the five long bones in the midfoot connecting the ankle to the toes. Metatarsal fractures are among the most common foot injuries, caused by direct impact, falls, or repetitive stress. A cast boot immobilizes the foot to prevent the fractured bone from shifting during healing, while the rocker bottom sole allows a more natural gait. Most metatarsal fractures heal within 6–8 weeks in a cast boot, though healing time varies based on fracture location, severity, and patient health.

How long will I need to wear a cast boot after a foot or ankle fracture?

Most stable metatarsal fractures require 4–6 weeks in a cast boot. Ankle fractures may require 6–8 weeks or longer. Stress fractures typically require 4–8 weeks depending on location and bone density. Your orthopedic surgeon or podiatrist will monitor healing with follow-up X-rays and advise when it is safe to transition out of the boot.

Can I walk normally in a cast boot, and do I need crutches?

The rocker bottom sole promotes a more natural heel-to-toe gait while wearing the boot. Most patients with stable fractures or moderate sprains can bear weight as tolerated — your doctor will specify your weight-bearing status. Crutches may be recommended initially. As healing progresses, most patients transition to full weight-bearing in the boot before returning to regular footwear.

Is this cast boot covered by insurance or Medicare?

The Ossur Formfit Short Non-Inflated Cast Boot is classified under HCPCS code L4387. Medicare Part B and most commercial insurance plans cover walking cast boots when prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider for a covered diagnosis. Coverage typically requires a written prescription and documentation of medical necessity. This product is also FSA/HSA eligible for out-of-pocket purchases. Contact your insurance provider for prior authorization requirements specific to your plan.
