Frequently Asked Questions

What is a knee hyperextension injury and how does this brace prevent it?

A knee hyperextension injury occurs when the knee is forced to bend backward beyond its normal range of motion, stretching or tearing the ACL, PCL, and surrounding structures. The DeRoyal Hypercontrol uses medial and lateral polycentric hinges and a criss-cross strapping mechanism to physically block backward knee bending while allowing normal forward flexion.

What is the difference between the Pull-Up and Wrap-Around styles?

The Pull-Up slides on like a sleeve with dual adjustable buttresses for patella stabilization and extension tabs for custom fit. The Wrap-Around opens fully for easy donning — ideal for post-surgical swelling or limited mobility. Both provide the same hyperextension control.

What ACL, MCL, and PCL injuries is the Hypercontrol used for?

Indicated for Grade I or II MCL/LCL sprains, mild ACL/PCL sprains, Grade I varus and valgus instability, and hyperextension injury prevention and recovery. Not a substitute for a post-op ROM brace after ACL reconstruction.

How do I measure for the correct size?

Measure thigh circumference 6 inches above the center of your kneecap. If between sizes, choose the larger size.

Is the DeRoyal Hypercontrol FSA or HSA eligible?

Yes — generally FSA and HSA eligible as a medical device. HCPCS code L1851 may apply. Verify with your insurance provider. OrthoTape does not bill insurance directly.

The Bomb!

This brace seems well made. It stabilizes knee in the exact position that enables me to bear weight on that leg and walk. I feel as if I can do a better and more even gait pattern while learning to walk. It seems well made. It does the job and, for me outshine others that I have purchased (also recommended per my therapist).

I have used these knee braces to deal with my hypertension of my knee for about 10 years. As with previous braces I had to adjust the brace to fit my leg such as shortening the hypertension straps. I’m satisfied with my brace as I have modified it.

This brace is exceptional!

I got this brace based on the advice of my physical therapist and I'm so happy I listened. It's great and holds my knee in place to get my leg and hip muscles moving like they did before my accident. Definitely recommended!
