AquaCast Waterproof Short Leg Cast Kit — Swim Cast Materials for Below-Knee Fractures

The AquaCast Waterproof Short Leg Cast Kit contains everything needed to create a true waterproof below-knee cast — AquaCast pillow-type waterproof padding, Saw Stop protective strip, and fiberglass casting tape. Bring this kit to your clinician for professional application. Once applied, patients can shower, bathe, and swim throughout their recovery without covering or removing the cast.

AquaCast is the successor to the original Gore Procel waterproof cast liner. Water flows through the open-cell pillow padding and drains freely, preventing the moisture buildup that causes traditional cotton-padded casts to soften, develop odor, and break down — especially critical for leg casts worn during summer or by active patients.

Why Choose AquaCast for a Waterproof Short Leg Cast?

  • True waterproof cast — not a removable cover. Water flows through and drains freely; no moisture trapped against skin
  • Soft pillow-type padding — cushioned feel for patient comfort from foot to below the knee throughout the healing period
  • Swim, shower & bathe freely — patients maintain normal hygiene and activity levels during recovery
  • Compatible with standard fiberglass tape — no proprietary casting system required
  • Pediatric through adult sizing — kits sized for every patient from infant to large adult
  • Successor to Gore Procel — same trusted waterproof cast liner technology, now under the AquaCast brand

Indications — Who Needs a Waterproof Short Leg Cast?

  • Stable ankle fractures (lateral malleolus, bimalleolar)
  • Foot fractures (metatarsal, calcaneus, midfoot)
  • Fifth metatarsal fractures (Jones fracture, dancer’s fracture)
  • Post-surgical immobilization of the ankle or foot
  • Active patients — children, swimmers, athletes — who cannot avoid water exposure during recovery

How to Apply AquaCast Waterproof Short Leg Cast

  1. Apply AquaCast Padding — wrap the pillow-type waterproof padding smoothly from the toes up to just below the knee, overlapping each layer by 50%
  2. Apply Saw Stop Strip — position the protective strip along both cast removal lines (medial and lateral) for safe removal later
  3. Apply Fiberglass Cast Tape — wrap over the AquaCast padding to complete the waterproof short leg cast

Must be applied by a trained orthopedic technician, physician, or casting staff. Bring this kit to your clinical appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I swim and shower with an AquaCast waterproof short leg cast?

Yes. AquaCast uses open-cell pillow-type padding that allows water to flow through and drain freely. Unlike traditional cotton-padded leg casts that trap moisture and break down when wet, AquaCast is designed for full water exposure — swimming, showering, and bathing are all permitted once the cast is properly applied by a clinician.

What is the difference between AquaCast and a waterproof leg cast cover?

A waterproof cast cover is a removable sleeve placed over a standard cast — it can leak and must be removed after bathing. AquaCast is a true waterproof cast liner that replaces traditional cotton padding inside the cast itself. Water passes through the padding and drains out, so no cover is needed and the cast stays on continuously throughout recovery.

Is AquaCast the same as Gore Procel?

Yes — AquaCast is the direct successor to the original Gore Procel waterproof cast liner. BSN Essity acquired the technology and continues to manufacture it under the AquaCast brand. The pillow-type padding design and waterproofing mechanism are the same trusted system used in orthopedic clinics for decades.

Does my doctor apply the AquaCast kit, or can I do it myself?

AquaCast must be applied by a trained orthopedic technician, physician, or casting staff. The kit is purchased by the patient and brought to the clinical appointment, where the clinician applies the padding, Saw Stop strip, and fiberglass tape. Self-application is not recommended and may result in improper fit or injury.

Is this kit FSA or HSA eligible?

AquaCast waterproof cast kits are generally FSA/HSA eligible when prescribed by a physician. Eligibility depends on your specific plan administrator — we recommend confirming with your FSA/HSA provider before purchase. OrthoTape is an authorized distributor of AquaCast (BSN Essity) products.
