How to Measure & Choose Your Size
Take two measurements with a soft tape measure while standing:
Calf circumference: 15 cm (6") below the mid-patella (center of kneecap)
Thigh circumference: 15 cm (6") above the mid-patella
Use both measurements together to confirm your size. If you fall between sizes, size up for comfort. Note: The hinge is placed on the side of the affected compartment — Medial for inner knee OA, Lateral for outer knee OA.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is knee osteoarthritis and how does an unloader brace help?
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease in which the cartilage cushioning the knee joint gradually wears away, causing bone-on-bone friction, pain, swelling, and stiffness. It most commonly affects one compartment of the knee — either the medial (inner) or lateral (outer) side. An unloader brace like the Össur FormFit OA Ease uses a 3-Point Leverage System to shift body weight away from the damaged compartment, reducing the compressive load on that area. This mechanical offloading can significantly reduce pain and improve walking ability without surgery.
What is the difference between medial and lateral knee OA, and which side do I choose?
Medial knee OA affects the inner compartment of the knee and is the most common form — patients often feel pain on the inside of the knee and may notice a bow-legged appearance. Lateral knee OA affects the outer compartment and is less common — patients feel pain on the outside of the knee and may appear knock-kneed. The hinge of the OA Ease brace is placed on the side of the affected compartment to provide the offloading force. If you have medial OA, choose a Medial variant; if you have lateral OA, choose a Lateral variant. Your orthopedic surgeon or physical therapist can confirm which compartment is affected based on your X-rays.
Can I wear this brace after knee replacement surgery or while waiting for surgery?
The Össur FormFit OA Ease is designed for non-surgical management of mild to moderate unicompartmental knee OA. It is commonly prescribed as a conservative treatment option to delay or avoid surgery, or to manage symptoms while awaiting a scheduled procedure. It is not indicated for use after total or partial knee replacement surgery — post-surgical bracing requires a different type of brace (typically a hinged ROM brace). Always follow your surgeon's specific post-operative protocol.
How long should I wear the OA Ease brace each day during recovery?
Wear time varies by individual and clinical recommendation. Most patients begin by wearing the brace during weight-bearing activities — walking, standing, climbing stairs — and remove it during rest or sleep. As comfort improves, many patients wear it throughout the day. Your physician or physical therapist will provide specific guidance based on your OA severity and activity level. Consistent daily use during activity is key to experiencing the full pain-relief benefit of the offloading mechanism.
Is the Össur FormFit OA Ease FSA or HSA eligible?
Yes, the Össur FormFit OA Ease is generally eligible for reimbursement through Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and Health Savings Accounts (HSA) as a qualified medical expense. HCPCS code L1845 applies to this category of unloader knee brace — verify with your insurer or plan administrator before purchase. OrthoTape is an authorized Össur dealer, so your purchase documentation will reflect a genuine medical device from an authorized source.
