AquaCast is a waterproof, breathable cast liner designed for use beneath waterproof casting materials. It is applied by trained casting staff and replaces traditional absorbent cast padding in a waterproof cast system.

Professional-use note: Cast selection, limb position, molding, weight-bearing status, and duration of immobilization should be determined by the treating healthcare professional.

IMPORTANT — SHARE THESE INSTRUCTIONS WITH YOUR CAST TECHNICIAN

AquaCast is applied differently from standard cotton cast padding, and some doctors or cast technicians may not have used this waterproof liner before.

Please send or show this page and the correct application video to your doctor or cast technician before the cast is applied. A few minutes reviewing the technique can help make sure the liner and Saw Stop strip are positioned correctly.

It is the purchaser/patient's responsibility to make sure the treating office receives these instructions before application. Do not assume the office has worked with AquaCast before.

The treating healthcare professional remains responsible for determining whether the product is appropriate and for the actual clinical application of the cast.

⚠️ KEEP THE FIBERGLASS CASTING TAPE SEALED UNTIL READY TO USE

The AquaCast liner and Saw Stop strip can be handled during preparation. The sealed-pouch warning applies to the fiberglass casting tape.

  • Do not open a casting-tape pouch to check the color, feel the roll, or inspect it.
  • Humidity can begin curing the moisture-activated resin once the pouch is opened.
  • Open only the roll you are ready to activate and apply.
  • If a pouch arrives torn, punctured, or already unsealed, do not open or use it. Photograph the unopened pouch and contact OrthoTape.

AquaCast Application Overview

  1. Prepare the patient and all materials before opening any fiberglass casting tape.
  2. Wrap the AquaCast liner smoothly around the limb using approximately 50% overlap and the product-specific technique shown in the video.
  3. Position the Saw Stop protective strip along the intended cast-removal line or lines as shown for the selected cast type.
  4. Open and activate each fiberglass casting-tape roll only when ready to apply it.
  5. Apply, mold, and finish the fiberglass cast using the appropriate cast technique.

After the Cast Gets Wet — Dry It Completely

OrthoTape recommends using a hair dryer on cool or low airflow after every wet exposure to speed drying and help move residual moisture out of the liner.

Let excess water drain first, then move the airflow around the cast until the liner and cast are completely dry. Do not use high heat, and do not assume the inside is dry just because the outer fiberglass feels dry.

  • Rinse the cast with clean water after pool or salt-water exposure.
  • Allow excess water to drain from the cast.
  • Use cool or low hair-dryer airflow to speed complete drying.
  • Pay extra attention to thicker areas, edges, folds, and accessories that can restrict airflow.

Short Leg Casts with a Walking Cast Heel

A walking cast heel creates an additional obstruction to airflow around the bottom of the cast.

Direct cool or low airflow carefully around the plantar base of the cast and around the walking cast heel until these areas are completely dry. Give this area extra drying time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should my doctor or cast technician review the AquaCast instructions before applying the cast?

Yes. AquaCast is applied differently from traditional cotton cast padding, and some casting staff may not have used it before. The purchaser or patient should provide this page and the correct application video to the treating office before the appointment.

What is AquaCast waterproof cast padding?

AquaCast is a waterproof, breathable cast liner used beneath waterproof casting materials. Its open-cell padding is designed to allow water to pass through and the cast to dry more quickly than traditional absorbent cotton padding.

Who should apply an AquaCast waterproof cast?

AquaCast should be applied by a trained healthcare professional or cast technician. The treating professional determines the correct cast type, limb position, molding, weight-bearing instructions, and whether the system is appropriate for the patient.

Can an AquaCast cast be used for swimming, showering, or bathing?

AquaCast is designed for waterproof casting and the manufacturer describes it as suitable for bathing and swimming when properly applied. Water exposure should still follow the treating healthcare professional's instructions for the patient's injury and cast.

Do I need to use a hair dryer after an AquaCast cast gets wet?

For OrthoTape's customer-care protocol, use a hair dryer on cool or low airflow after each wet exposure to speed drying and help move residual moisture out of the liner. Let excess water drain first, avoid high heat, and continue until the cast is completely dry.

How should I dry an AquaCast short leg cast with a walking cast heel?

The walking heel can restrict airflow around the plantar base of the cast. Direct cool or low airflow carefully around the base and heel assembly and give this area additional drying time.

Can I open the fiberglass casting-tape pouch before the cast is applied?

No. The AquaCast liner and Saw Stop strip can be handled during preparation, but the fiberglass casting tape must stay sealed until the clinician is ready to activate and apply each roll.
