Delta Dry is a two-piece water-resistant undercast system that uses a Delta Dry stockinette plus Delta Dry padding beneath fiberglass casting tape. Its open-knit construction is designed to promote drainage, airflow, and moisture evaporation after water exposure.

Professional-use note: Cast selection, limb position, molding, weight-bearing status, and duration of immobilization should be determined by the treating healthcare professional.

IMPORTANT — SHARE THESE INSTRUCTIONS WITH YOUR CAST TECHNICIAN

Delta Dry is not applied exactly like a traditional cotton-padded cast, and some doctors or cast technicians may not have used this system before.

Please send or show this page and the correct application video to your doctor or cast technician before the cast is applied. A quick review helps make sure the stockinette and waterproof padding are used in the intended sequence.

It is the purchaser/patient's responsibility to make sure the treating office receives these instructions before application. Do not assume the office has worked with Delta Dry before.

The treating healthcare professional remains responsible for determining whether the product is appropriate and for the actual clinical application of the cast.

⚠️ KEEP THE FIBERGLASS CASTING TAPE SEALED UNTIL READY TO USE

The Delta Dry stockinette and padding can be handled during preparation. The sealed-pouch warning applies to the fiberglass casting tape.

  • Do not open a casting-tape pouch to check the color, feel the roll, or inspect it.
  • Humidity can begin curing the moisture-activated resin once the pouch is opened.
  • Open only the roll you are ready to activate and apply.
  • If a pouch arrives torn, punctured, or already unsealed, do not open or use it. Photograph the unopened pouch and contact OrthoTape.

Delta Dry Application Overview

  1. Prepare the patient and all materials before opening any fiberglass casting tape.
  2. Apply the Delta Dry water-resistant stockinette smoothly over the limb.
  3. Wrap Delta Dry padding over the stockinette using approximately 50% overlap and smooth out wrinkles.
  4. Open and activate each fiberglass casting-tape roll only when ready to apply it.
  5. Apply, mold, and finish the fiberglass cast using the appropriate cast technique.

After the Cast Gets Wet — Drain and Dry Thoroughly

Delta Dry's open-knit structure is designed to accelerate drainage and allow residual moisture to evaporate. Essity states that body heat helps evaporate remaining moisture through the breathable mesh.

For OrthoTape's customer-care protocol, use a hair dryer on cool or low airflow after wet exposure to speed drying and give extra attention to areas with limited airflow.

Let excess water drain first. Do not use high heat, and do not assume the inside is dry just because the outer fiberglass feels dry.

  • Rinse the cast with clean water after pool or salt-water exposure.
  • Allow excess water to drain from the cast.
  • Use cool or low airflow to speed drying, especially around thicker areas and accessories.
  • Follow the treating professional's instructions for skin checks, activity, and weight-bearing.

Short Leg Casts with a Walking Cast Heel

A walking cast heel can restrict airflow around the plantar base of the cast.

Direct cool or low airflow carefully around the base and walking heel area and give these areas extra drying time. Make sure they are fully dry before prolonged shoe or floor contact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should my doctor or cast technician review the Delta Dry instructions before applying the cast?

Yes. Delta Dry uses a two-part undercast system and may be unfamiliar to some casting staff. The purchaser or patient should provide this page and the correct application video to the treating office before the appointment.

How is Delta Dry different from traditional cast padding?

Delta Dry uses a water-resistant stockinette plus open-knit water-resistant padding beneath the fiberglass cast. The open-knit structure is designed to accelerate drainage and allow residual moisture to evaporate through the breathable mesh.

Who should apply a Delta Dry waterproof cast?

A trained healthcare professional or cast technician should apply the system. The treating professional determines the correct cast type, limb position, molding, weight-bearing instructions, and whether the product is appropriate for the patient.

Can a Delta Dry cast get wet?

The manufacturer describes Delta Dry as allowing patients to shower, swim, and bathe. Water exposure should still follow the treating healthcare professional's instructions for the patient's injury and cast.

How does a Delta Dry cast dry after water exposure?

The open-knit padding is designed to drain water and allow body heat to evaporate residual moisture. For OrthoTape's customer-care protocol, cool or low hair-dryer airflow is also recommended to speed drying, especially in areas where airflow is restricted. Do not use high heat.

What if a Delta Dry short leg cast has a walking cast heel?

A walking cast heel can restrict airflow around the plantar base. Direct cool or low airflow around the base and heel assembly and give those areas extra drying time before prolonged shoe or floor contact.

Can I open the fiberglass casting-tape pouch before the appointment?

No. The Delta Dry stockinette and padding can be handled during preparation, but each fiberglass casting-tape pouch should remain sealed until the clinician is ready to activate and apply that roll.
